“Music City”, they call it.
Nashville is the home of Third Man Records, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and the Pancake Pantry, among other great establishments. Where the greats of country music walked among us like mere mortals. Artists like Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash and Elvis.
We recently had the privilege to visit home of the Grand Ole Opry and it was one of the best trips we have had the opportunity to take.
We started out at Jackon’s, an incredibly chic breakfast bar, with the most delicious peach mimosas, and definitely no shortage of Vandy fraternity boys curing their hangovers. Let me tell you, I asked for a side of gravyand they brought me the whole boat. That’s my kind of place! When I was younger, my dad’s catch phrase for family dinners was “Everything’s better with gravy!” I will believe that until the day I die.
Did you know there is a life size version of Ancient Greece’s The Parthenon right in the middle of Nashville? Neither did we. But it was inspiring! Every detail had been taken into account and artfully executed.
There is nothing better than a honky tonk and some Hank Williams with the smell of sweet Memphis style ‘que in the air. The evening strole around town was nothing short of delectable…to our ears and our stomachs.
As all good Texans know, Country music is more than just some fiddles in the band…it’s part of our soul. Being in Music City was like coming home. You can just feel the history.
For dinner, we chose a resident favorite by the name of Jack’s BBQ. It was a subway style line with all the fixin’s (yes, I said fixin’s) mac’n’cheese, cinnamon baked apples, potato salad, green beans, corn bread…are you salivating yet? Don’t forget about the main attraction! Oh Mylanta, the brisket, the smoked chicken, the tender turkey and don’t even get me started on the sauce! I’m dying.
The best part was definitely saved for last, Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. It was the loudest, most crowded and by far the most absolutely perfect bar I have ever been to. Country music requests ALL NIGHT LONG. From Nitty Gritty to Zac Brown, every song was on point. My life was complete. Live music in a real Honky Tonk. Claudio on the other hand, well, he tolerated it and he’s my hero for it. I had one of the most memorable nights of my life.
Our time spent in Nashville was a cultural experience. We will definitely be back!
There is always more to come.
